Conditional Upsells

Conditional upsells are when the second sale is contingent on the first.

This tactic is where the menu and upsell strategies work together to maximise revenue.

Example 1

(upsell #1) A diner upgrades to the set menu (+$25)

(upsell #2) The diner then gets offered the upgraded meat (+$11)

Total upsell value = $36

Example 2

(upsell #1) A diner orders fries with their burger (+$10)

(upsell #2) The diner then gets the special sauce to go with the fries (+$3)

Total upsell value = $13

Example 3

"If you're having the grilled prawns in XO sauce, I highly recommend getting the bread so you can mop up the sauce." (+$8)

Total upsell value = $8

The role that menu engineering plays is crucial because the upselling is based on the initial menu selections. It's the "you can't have this without that strategy"
